Seeking Lifeguards

The Brighton Square Pool is a private neighborhood pool located off Leigh and Curter in the Cambrian area of San Jose. Our homeowner’s association is looking for certified lifeguards for the upcoming pool season (May-September).

Job Description

Position title: Lifeguard

Time: Part-time

Pay: Starting rate $18/hour

Position Purpose: To provide a safe, healthy, and friendly swim experience for homeowners and their guests at the Brighton Square pool.

Essential Duties

  1. Supervise swimmers at all times.

  2. Spot potential hazards and prevent accidents in and around the pool area. Direct swimmers out of the pool if hazardous conditions occur. 

  3. Assess water safety and communicate concerns and/or best practices to swimmers and/or their parents/guardians/caretakers.

  4. Respond to unruly behavior to ensure a safe, fun, and friendly swim environment for all swimmers.

  5. Monitor weather reports and respond appropriately to ensure the safety of all swimmers. 

  6. Maintain a clean environment in and around the pool and bathrooms. This includes but is not limited to emptying trash and recycling receptacles, picking up trash, restocking bathrooms, addressing minor maintenance problems, etc.

  7. Routinely test and adjust pool chemicals to ensure a safe swimming environment.

  8. Routinely clean leaves and debris from pool surface and skimmers.

  9. Oversee party reservations.

  10. Communicate and enforce pool rules (i.e., no running, no glass on the pool deck) as needed.

  11. Answer questions and provide assistance to homeowners and their guests as appropriate.

  12. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  1. Possess current Lifeguard Certification and Training with First Aid with CPR/AED.

  2. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

  3. Willingness to handle and work with standard pool chemicals (e.g. chlorine) following best safety practices.

Additional Qualifications and Expectations

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.

  2. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

  3. General knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. 

  4. Ability to be responsive to emails, texts, messages or other forms of communication from lead lifeguard, BSIA Board members, or property management.

  5. Demonstrated ability to arrive promptly to scheduled shifts.

  6. Possess friendly demeanor and be able to treat others with respect.

Work Environment

  1. Moderate physical activity. Requires handling average-weight objects up to 25 pounds and/or standing or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

  2. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

  3. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
